Teaching the Next Generation

Teaching the next generation of engineers and scientists is a privilege and a responsibility not to be taken lightly. Dr. Roger Tipton has taught the following courses:

Teaching Philosophy

With 25 years of industry experience spanning the shop floor to executive leadership, I believe hands-on, experiential learning is essential to a student’s development. Training students with an eye toward industry gives them more than theoretical ideas: it gives them skills they can apply directly in their careers. My courses pair fundamental theory with hands-on labs, projects, and real equipment so that students graduate ready to contribute from day one.

Mentoring Philosophy

My approach to mentoring in the Performance Materials Laboratory follows the same principle as my teaching: students should leave with practical, industry-ready skills, not just results for a thesis or publication. Drawing on my industry background, I mentor students to think like problem solvers and communicators, not just researchers, so they are prepared to succeed whether they go on to industry, academia, or entrepreneurship.

Outreach

Our lab supports a thriving entrepreneurship community in the Charlotte region. Helping students and startups developing new intellectual property, setting up business, developing business plans, and sourcing new funding opportunities is an exciting and rewarding way to support innovation in our community.
